La trouvaille de la semaine est une bague chinée chez un brocanteur, dans une de ces boites où ils laissent tous les petits trucs sans valeur... Sauf qu'elle en jette, non ?
Ce n'est pas de l'argent et la "pierre" en verre (ou peut-être en cristal) a beaucoup vécu. Elle est devenue assymétrique : on voit bien qu'un petit cylindre a disparu sur un des deux côtés. Mais pour du métal sans valeur, on voit aussi que la facture est de bonne qualité, donc ancienne...
J'hésite encore à la garder telle quelle (ce que j'ai fait jusqu'ici) ou à la modifier...
Encore une histoire à suivre.


This week's find is an old ring that I unearthed on a flea maket stand, in one of those boxes where they put worthless bits and bobs. I love those... And this ring is quite striking, isn't it?
It's base metal and the stone is bruised and battered glass (or possibly crystal); you can see a small cylinder came out on one side— it used to be symmetrical. I think relatively antique, given he quality of the work on what is only costume jewellery.
Still not sure whether I'll keep it as is (as I have so far) or alter and enhance it.
So— another piece that hasn't quite found its place. Yet.

How to take care of your art— information for buyers.

Because of the variety of crafts I dabble in, there cannot be one answer to this, except to point out that anything extreme (temperature, activity, fingering... or even cleansing!) is going to be potentially damaging.

So, first things first.

When you buy jewellery from me, you're going to be aware of the materials used, because I always give as much information as I can in my listings.

If you buy pearls— since I tend to use silver or vermeil with them, but not glue— a little soft soap and warm water once in a while, followed by thorough rinsing and immediately by light-handed dry padding with cotton cloth, is going to revive your pearls for as long as you love them.

My more whimsical jewellery often involves the use of glue. This entails that though you should be able to rinse it (it will survive rain too!), soaking is an absolute No No. My motto for cocktail rings: "No shock, shower, no dish washing!"

Anything that involves several elements shall definitely come apart if you try it...

The good news is that most of my pieces can also be mended.

As for textiles, I like my own possessions to be washable, so most of what I make can be washed. But any handmade accessory, especially embroidered and embellished ones, will have to be hand-washed, just to be on the safe side. I use nearly no synthetics, so, yes, the fabric will age, as we do. Careful storing and moth-repellents work well...

What do you do to network? In what ways does it work or not work?

These days, I have even less time for networking than for crafting.

Over the past few years, I have tried the usual (myspace, blogging, among others) and the less usual (this Merry-Go-Round, the Thursday Sweet Treat...). I don't believe the networking sites, such as myspace and facebook (which I keep personal) are any good for me.

The only forum I still visit on a daily basis is the DaWanda forum. If only because I find it much more congenial than the Etsy forum where you get a measure of support but also a lot of gratuitous aggression. I have no time for this... Still, the Etsy forum is where I found the Thusrday Sweet Treat, which was a really inspiring 'place', (when I still had time to be part of it...) and it is much faster than the DaWanda one, especially in English, which is a shame.

As I have never done this full time,
I really have no idea what concrete results it has brought about, or what it could have. What I do know, though, is that it has allowed me to learn a lot from fellow crafters. It has also inspired me in a way I couldn't have been if I had only been focusing on making and selling.

It has kept me curious and — relatively— ambitious.

In short, though it sometimes felt like the networking time was stolen from crafting, I suspect I wouldn't be crafting at all anymore, if it wasn't for the virtual ties that have kept me going.

Using my blog address as a signature at the bottom of all my mails has brought me at least two clients among aquaintances who didn't know of that part of my life. I also keep giving away my business cards, though I still don't know what effect it may have had. Who knows...

Inside: a wonderful Magical (I say) Roving Eye Ring with a Seafaring Cuff Bracelet. All of Turquoise and Blue. I love the colours, and I love the detailing in that soft, wavy foam-like line! Just when I'm beginning to yearn for the sea and a great big gulp of sea air...

What's that? I hear you wonder...

Well, over the months, you will have seen many photos of nature and the countryside on this blog, so I thought that, this time, I should show something you don't know of. Something crucially inspirationnal to me indeed.


What this photo shows is a minature Jag (the famous E-Type). This one is actually a gift from my lovely mother who first told me about this amazing job.
I guess it is a car for girls then.
I wish!...

Anyway, it is my car, you know...



Not only has this glorious piece of British designing genius inspired me to finally pass my driving licence (not a small feat, I can assure you) which was my own Christmas Miracle of 2009, but it has inspired a new line in my jewellery.

Wait, not one but three!

You might remember that over the past few Merry-go-Rounds, I was doing a lot of mulling. Well this Belle Anglais sort of pulled me through.


Starting from this seemingly absurd choice of car (no I don't have one yet, well, apart from this miniature one, but one day— just you wait!) it brought me to accept the fact I am genrally a fairly high-maintenance creature. Or rather, I would be if I was not doing all the maintening myself...



The result of this simple reflexion is a carload of ideas to make up the High-Maintenance line.
The blue Jag Ring is the first piece in this line— had to be— but there will be plenty more...

Following this whim, I also came up with loads of ideas for Difficult Women (I love them!), beginning with this Thelma & Louise ring (OK, it's a black Mercedes, but whenever I see an angular convertible like this one, I think T & L...).

Finally, obviously there will be the (Self-)Love is Blind line, Beginning with this I am a Goddess ring. OK, this really works much better in French because this car is a Citrën DS (DS sound exactly like "déesse", the French word for goddess...), but who doesn't want to be a French goddess, right? (she flashes a shameless arrogant grin).

Bois (particulièrement le bois de noix de coco), gemmes (pierres), coquillages, dentelle, velours, papier de riz.

Les différentes tonalités de la mer, mais fondamentalement je les aime toutes !
4) A quoi vous servent vos cinq sens ?
J’adore mes cinq sens (le sixième y compris...) et je ne peux pas imaginer qu’il m’en manque un seul d'entre eux - ils sont tous parfaits ! Quand nous nous relions à notre sensibilité nous pouvons employez un plus grand potentiel de nos sens et ainsi atteindre certains merveilleux niveaux élevés grâce à eux...
5) Pourquoi créer ?
Je pense fortement qu’un de nos principaux buts dans la vie est de créer,
que ce soit par l’art, les enfants, que ce soit dans de différentes réalités et par différentes expériences et ainsi de suite...

Le projet : MA VIE !!! projet très intéressant qui inclut tellement…

1) What is your favourite word?
Scrumptious.
2) What is / are your favourite material(s) / fabric(s)?
Has to be silver art clay. It's the reason I got into jewellery initially. I love the way you can be quite inexperienced, but very quickly create some beautiful objects. It's brilliant for jewellery beginners, but also you can develop a good level of skill fairly quickly. Plus, the process is quite fascinating. Moulding, keading, rolling, stamping, cutting whilst wet. Then you can etch and file and smooth when dry.. Once dry, the firing process turns this re-cycled silver - back to silver.
3) Do you have a favourite colour?
Red, not sure why, always has been. Any shade from fairly muted to absolute screaming crimson!!
4) What good are your five senses to you?
Smell - wow, imagine being without it!! Imagine not smelling food for starters!! But other fantastic smells - the smell your Christmas tree gives your house, like walking through a forest; fabulous perfume; flowers (especially gorgeous roses).
Sight - I doubt I could do what I do without it!! I cannot imagine not knowing what a colour is or having never seen my family and friends.
Taste - well it lets me taste food and yummy wine, need I say more!!!
Touch - I love the feel of gorgeous quality pearls, smooth to the touch, or the feel of soft fabric against your skin..
Hearing - wonderful music or the splendid silence of the hills, where would I be without either?
5) Why the need to make things?
Always had a 'creative ' slant. I was accepted into art college after school and did a year of Architecture - but I didn't enjoy it and left to do a Communication degree. Still creative, but ended up in HR for a large corporate. But that's what pushed me to create jewellery as a form of stress relief and it just gathered momentum from there! I sit at my day job planning what to make in the evening!! (Oh I also work quite hard - honest!!)
6) What is your most ambitious project at the moment?
A very heavily beaded bracelet with my most elaborate toggle clasp yet. Toggle clasps are a bit of an obession at the moment.
7) What is your pet (non-creative!) addiction?
tennis, tennis and more tennis. I cannot seem to play enough!! Roll on wimbledon!!

"scrumptious" [un mot très savoureux pour dire délectable...NDLR]
2) Votre / Vos matériaux / fibre(s) préféré(s) ?
Sans hésiter, la pâte d'argent ["silver clay" ou "art clay", peu répandue en France, malheureusement.... NDLR]. C'est la raison pour laquelle je me suis mise à faire des bijoux au début. J'aime le fait que même sans avoir aucune expérience, on peut très vite faire de très belles choses. C'est super pour les débutants en bijouterie, et on peu développer son savoir-faire très rapidement. En plus, le processus est fascinant. Mouler, pétrir, rouler, poinçonner, couper, tant que c'est humide. Ensuite on peu poncer et lisser quand c'est sec. Et une fois que c'est sec, la cuisson transforme cet argent recyclé... en argent à nouveau.
3) Avez-vous une couleur préférée ?
Le rouge. je ne sais pas trop pourquoi : c'est depuis toujours. De la nuance la plus discrète à l'écarlate le plus tonitruant !
4) A quoi vous servent vos cinq sens ?
Odorat - Oh la la , imaginez un peu devoir s'en passer!! Imaginez ne pas sentir la nourriture par exemple !! Et toutes ce autres odeurs extraordinaires - l'odeur qu'un arbre de Noël répand dans votre maison, on se croirait dans une forêt ; des parfums fabuleux ; les fleurs (surtout les merveilleuses rose).
Vue - Je ne crois pas que je pourrais faire sans !! Je ne peux pas imaginer ce que ce serait de ne pas savoir ce qu'est une couleur ni sans avoir jamais vu ma famille ou mes amis.
Goût - Et bien ça me permets de déguster de la bonne nourriture ou de délicieux vins. Sans commentaire !!!
Toucher - J'aime la sensation tactile des perles de qualité, si lisses, ou encore celle d'une étoffe douce sur la peau.
Ouïe - Une merveilleuse musique ou le silence grandiose des collines : que devriendrais-je sans eux?
5) Pourquoi créer ?
J'ai toujours été "créative"... J'ai été acceptée dans une école d'études artistiques après le lycée, et fait une année d'Architecture ; mais ça ne m'a pas plus et j'ai arrêté pour préparer un diplôme de Communication. Toujours créative, mais je me suis retrouvée aux Ressources Humaines dans un grand groupe.Mais c'est justement ça qui m'a poussée à créer des bijoux, pour me détendre... et puis ensuite ça a pris de plus en plus d'importance ! Quand je suis au travail, dans la journée, je réfléchis à ce que je vais fabriquer le soir!! (Oh mais je travaille aussi très dur, je vous assure!)
6) Votre projet ambitieux du moment ?
Un bracelet très élaboré en perles recouvertes de perles de rocailles et avec un fermoir en T. Les fermoirs en T m'obsèdent un peu en ce moment...
7) Votre addiction (non-créative !) ?
Le tennis, le tennis, et encore et toujours plus de tennis : je n'arrive pas à m'en lasser. Et vive Wimbledon !

Long time no write. Yes! I've been very lazy— but very busy too.

Well, it's hard to choose one but some of my favourite word are LOVE, sea, passion, respect and hunny-that´s how I call my husband :)

I love different and unique materials but silk, gemstones and wire is my biggest fav.

Yes, many of them :) red, pink and turquoise blue.

Well I need them for all.
5) Why the need to make things?
First it's my second love and it's my hobby. I can't imagine my day without making something creative.

My first ambitious project was my first exhibition which was during May 2008 in Sweden. I'm glad that it was like I imagine. My next big project is to sell my jewelry across the world. I've sold some jewelry to people in Germany, USA and Norway.
7) What is your pet (non-creative!) addiction?
Chocolate and ice-cream.. For me it's like breakfast.

Il y a plusieurs matériaux différents que j'aime, mais la soie, les pierres et le fil de métal on ma préférence.

A tout.
5) Pourquoi créer ?
Premièrement, c'est mon deuxième amour et c'est mon violon d'Ingres. Je ne peux pas imaginer une journée sans créer.
6) Votre projet ambitieux du moment ?
Mon premier projet ambitieux était ma première exposition, qui a eu lieu en mai dernier, en Suède. Je suis contente que ça se soit passé comme je l'imaginais. Mon prochain grand projet est de vendre mes bijoux dans le monde entier. J'ai déjà fait des ventes en Allemange, aux Etats-Unis et en Norvège.
7) Votre addiction (non-créative !) ?
Le chocolat et la crème glacée. Aussi nécessaire que le petit-déjeuner.

1) What is your favourite word?

Inspiration - although I also find it a frustrating word when I don't have any.

2) What is / are your favourite material(s) / fabric(s)?

I like to work with sterling silver wire as it's so versatile - I can bend, shape, twist, coil, solder, oxidise and hammer it, hopefully into something attractive! I'm planning to take a silver-smith course at my local college in September as I'd like to learn some more advanced techniques.

3) Do you have a favourite colour?

It changes with my mood! At the moment I seem to be drawn to pinks and purples.

4) What good are your five senses to you?

I can't imagine life without them! I believe creative people are more in touch with their senses - sometimes just listening to music, looking at a beautiful work of art or strolling through a garden can be enough to help me when I'm struggling for inspiration. I also love food!

5) Why the need to make things?

I don't know why, but I've always felt the need to create from a young age - it seems to run in my family too. At any point in my life, I have always had a hobby of some sort that has involved creating - from gardening, candle-making, glass-painting and drawing, plus many others!

6) What is your most ambitious project at the moment?

Making a living from creating jewellery! It's a very competitive business, and I find myself working very long hours trying to promote my work. As well as trying to sell online, I also supply several local bridal shops with made-to-order wedding jewellery, which helps to keep me going!

7) What is your pet (non-creative!) addiction?

Reading! I love books - history, fiction, biographies, as well as lots of jewellery-making books, of course!

Inspiration... mêm si c'est u mot que je trouve très irritant quand j'en manque !

j'aime travailler avec le fil d'argent parce qu'il offre tellement de possibilités : je peux le courber, le façonner, le tordre, l'enrouler, le souder, l'oxyder, le marteler. Pour en faire quelque chose d'attirant, du moins j'espère ! J'ai l'intention de prendre des cours d'orfèvrerie en septembre pour apprendre de nouvelles techniques.

3) Avez-vous une couleur préférée ?

C'est selon mon humeur. En ce moment, ce sont les roses et les mauves.

4) A quoi vous servent vos cinq sens ?

Je ne peux pas imaginer ma vie sans eux ! Je crois que les gens créatifes sont plus à l'écoute de leurs sens. J'écout de la musique, je regarde des oeuvres d'art, je me promène dans des jardins, et parfois c'est assez pour retrouver mon inspiraton. Et j'aime beaucoup manger!

5) Pourquoi créer ?

je ne sais pas, mais c'est un besoin que j'ai ressenti depuis mon plus jeune âge. Et c'est de famille. J'ai toujours eu des activités de loisir manuelles : le jardinage, fabriquer des bougies, la peinture sur verre et le dessin, et bien d'autres encore !

6) Votre projet ambitieux du moment ?

La lecture : j'adore lire, des livres d'Histoire, des romans, des biographies... et bien sûr plein de livres sur les techniques de bijouterie, bien sûr.

1) What is your favourite word?
Artisan - In Cyprus there are two kinds of jewellery to be found. Fine jewelry, which is the very expensive one (think of diamonds, pure gold, etc) and costume jewelry (this is the 'fashion' type, with cheap material which you usually throw away after one season of wearing as it gets all discoloured and out of fashion. So I'm trying to bring to Cyprus a new style of jewellery, artisan, which is basically unique, one of a kind and completely handmade of more expensive materials than the costume jewelry, but cheaper than the fine jewelry (think sterling silver and semi-precious stones).
2) What is / are your favourite material(s) / fabric(s)?
Currently I love working with 925 sterling silver, with semiprecious stones and a latecomer to the game, I've just discovered lampwork beads, which I am more and more incoporating in my silver jewelry.
3) Do you have a favourite colour?
Yes, purple, and any shades of it (think mauve, lilac, basically any color combination resulting from mixing red and blue).
4) What good are your five senses to you?
When I run out of ideas or creativity, when I'm in a rut, I love browsing the google pictures or flickr on jewelry, I see some gorgeous pieces and this immediately brings me back into the mood of creating. I also love the feeling of a chainmail bracelet on my wrist or neck, and I enjoy feeling the various pliers in my hands. Of course, when my dad sees that I have more pliers than my hubby in my tool stash, he's mighty proud of me *grins*.
I'm usually listening to music while I'm working on my next piece. Mostly I have reiki, meditation music on, it's so calming and relaxing.
5) Why the need to make things?
Simply because I enjoy it, it makes me complete.
6) What is your most ambitious project at the moment?
Starting up my own jewelry business, even if just part time for now, and getting away from the big corporate world. A mighty step...
7) What is your pet (non-creative!) addiction?
Reading and trading books online. I have currently about 2000 TBR (to be read) books (yes, that many), most which are overflowing in every possible room and corner available. And I can't stop trading books online, particularly at http://www.bookmooch.com (a completely free and international book trading site. I highly recommend it!. I've made friends with some great people from all over the world while trading books with them...). When a book from my wishlist becomes available and I can 'mooch' it (that means get it from the person who made it available for trading), I'm doing my happy dance right there in my craft room :)

1) Quel est votre mot préféré?
Artisan. Ici à Chypre, on trouve deux sortes de bijoux : les bijoux de joaillerie, qui sont très chers (pensez diamants, or pur, etc) et les bijoux fantaisie (le genre à la mode, faits avec des matériaux bon marché et que l'on jette souvent au bout d'une seule saison parce qu'ils se décolorent et se démodent). Alors j'essaie d'apporter à Chypre une troisième sorte de bijoux : les bijoux artisanaux. Ils sont fondamentalement uniques et entièrement faits à la main dans des matériaux plus coûteux que les bijoux fantaisie, mais moins que les bijoux de joaillerie (pensez argent et pierres semi-précieuses).
2)Votre / Vos matériaux / fibre(s) préfé(s)?
En ce moment, je travaille beaucoup l'argent 925, ainsi que des pierres semi-précieuse, et les nouvelles venuesque je viens de découvrir : les perles de verres façonnées au chalumeau ("lampwork beads"), que j'utilise de plus en plus dans mes bijoux en argent.
3) Avez-vous une couleur préférée?
Oui, le violet,dans toutes ses nuances (mauve, lilas, en fait, toutes les couleurs qui résultent d'un mélange bleu-rouge).
4) A quoi vous servent vos cinq sens?
Qaund je suis un peu à court d'idées et de créativité, quand je suis dans une ornière, j'aime beaucoup regarder les photos de bijoux sur Google ou sur Flickr : je découvre des pièces somptueuses et ça me remet tout de suite dans une humeur créative. J'aime aussi beaucoup la sensation des bijoux en mailles ('chainmail') sur mon poignet ou sur mon cou, et j'adore sentir les pinces dans ma main. Bien sûr, quand mon Papa voit qu'il y a plus de paires de pinces différentes dans ma boite à outils que dans celle de mon petit mari, il est extrêmement fier :-).
En général, j'écoute de la musique en travaillant. Le plus souvent c'est de la musique de méditation parce que ça me calme et me relaxe.
5) Pourquoi créer?
Simplement parce que j'y prends plaisir. Je me sens complète.

6) Votre projet ambitieux du moment?
Monter ma propre entreprise, même si ce n'est qu'à temps partiel pour l'instant, et m'échapper du monde des grandes entreprises. Un grand pas...
7) Votre addiction (non-créative !) ?
Lire, et échanger des livres en ligne. J'ai en ce moment environ 2000 livres à lire (si, si, 2000), dont la plupart débordent d'à peu près tous les coins et recoins chez moi. Et je ne peux pas m'arrêter d'échanger des leivres en ligne, en particulier sur http://www.bookmooch.com (un site international d'échange de livres complètement. Je recommande!. Je me suis fait des amis géniaux dans le monde entier en échangeant des livres avec eux sur ce site...). Quand un livre de ma liste de souhaits devient disponible et quand le peux le "taxer" ('mooch') parce que quelqu'un le propose sur le site, je fais une petite danse de célébration juste ici, dans mon atelier :)

1. What is your favourite word?

Texture! It describes so many sensual feelings and emotions.


2. What is/are your favourite material(s)/fabric(s)?

I love any fabric with a textural weave, so tweeds and herringbones, to velvets and flowing silk.


3. Do you have a favourite colour?

At the moment I love shades of pink or green, which you can see from my shops!


4. What good are your five senses to you?

The five senses are extremely important to me and my whole being is effected by my reaction to each sensual experience. I am at my happiest when each is challenged and treated with love and at my weakest when a sense is violated. For work I use my senses to create and in my personal life to show love to those who are close.


5. Why the need to make things?

I think creation is in my nature! I am restless and am always inventing things in my head, so I create to let it out and save me from lying awake all night!


6. What is your most ambitious project at the moment?

My most ambitious project this year is turning my brand ‘Sara’s Texture Crafts’ into a successful business… This is me out on my own for the first time, so I am nervous and very proud of what I have achieved so far.



7. What is your pet (non-creative!) addiction?

Chocolate! I enjoy watching fancy chocolate being made and of course to eat it!
